Rimland, Bernard. "Autism." Encyclopedia Americana. 2009. Grolier Online. 23 Sept. 2009 .

• Autism affects 1 out of every 1000 people, it occurs four times as more in boys than girls. It doesn’t depend on the racial or social background. It can affect any race and social background.

• The word autism comes from the Greek word for “self”. The reason it is; is because when tou have autism you usually cant interact with anything else or anyone else. They daydream and are usually all about themselves and don’t know how to socialize so they are all by them self.

• With autism it is picked out when you are born. You can tell when they have autism because they seem out of it all the time, they do not respond when you look at them. Autism cannot be diagnosed till they are 2 ½ years old.

• People with autism can get better with proper treatment. With autism they learn best in well-organized places with just one teacher. The two treatments used most often include educational or behavior treatment and medication.

• A condition known as, childhood disintegrative disorder is a condition where they seem fine when they are born, but as they grow up they develop autism.
